August 2023
The days are still sun-drenched, the landscape in full greenery, but there is a shifting into harvest season, where we experience the bounty of the seeds sown months ago.

Farmer’s Market Survey
We’d love to get some feedback from our newsletter subscribers about their activities and thoughts about farmer’s markets. This feedback will help us plan for our next season.
Every survey respondent is entered to win a $35 Harvest Box from our farm - filled with that week's vegetable, herb, and flower harvests. A winner will be chosen at random and we will work with them to coordinate a pick up of the harvest box for the week of September 18 at the farm or one of our market locations.
The survey will be open until August 31.
News from the Farm
It has rain A LOT in the last two weeks on the farm. Over 7.5” to be exact. We’ve never experienced that much rainfall in such a short duration of time since we started vegetable farming. It’s left a detrimental impact on some of our crops, especially those in one section of our 1-acre plot that is made up of heavier clay soil and is lower lying. Between a spring drought, late frost, and now significant rainfall, it has been a difficult weather-year for local farms, including are ours.
We are however thrilled to be able to be a part of this month’s Farm to Table Dinner experience to support the Lewiston Artisan Farmers Market. We sowed lettuce beds in between the rainfall last week and are excited to be able to share our signature salad mix with the guests of the dinner! Most of the food at the Farm to Table Dinner will feature farms and vendors from the Lewiston Artisan Farmers Market. Dinner include three appetizers, salad, a main dish, dessert, coffee, and 1 beer/cider on Wednesday, August 23 at 6:00pm. Tickets are on sale now!

Wilted Mixed Greens
2 pounds mixed tender greens (dandelion, spinach, arugula, chard, kale, watercress, mustard greens, raab, etc.)
2/3 cup apple cider vinegar or 1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil
2 teaspoons salt
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
1/3 cup crumbled blue cheese (optional)
Directions:
Coat frying pan with vinegar or olive oil. Toss in mixed greens and cover for about 5 minutes. Remove from heat. Toss and season. Sprinkle the greens with the crumbled blue cheese (if using).
Zucchini Cobbler
8 to 9 cups zucchini, peeled, seeds removed and chopped
3/4 cup lemon juice
1 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
3/4 cup sugar
4 cups flour
1 3/4 cups sugar (optional, or reduce to 1 1/2 cups)
1 1/2 cups butter
2 tablespoons cinnamon/sugar mixture, for topping
Directions:
Mix chopped zucchini, 3/4 cup sugar, lemon juice together in a large saucepan and cook over medium heat until tender (about 10 minutes).
Add cinnamon and nutmeg to zucchini mixture and cook for another minute. Set aside.
Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 10x15 inch baking dish.
In a large bowl, combine flour and 1 3/4 cups sugar. Cut in butter with pastry blender until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
Scoop out 1/2 cup of mixture and stir into the zucchini mixture.
Divide the remaining crumbs in half and press half into bottom of the greased pan.
Spread the zucchini mixture in the pan. Top with remaining crumb mixture.
Mix a teaspoon of cinnamon with 2 tablespoons of sugar and sprinkle on top of crumb mixture.
Bake for 30-40 minutes until top is golden brown. This is great served either warm or cold with whipped cream or a scoop of ice cream.
Growing Together
Chesnok Red Hardneck Garlic
Chesnok Red is a Purple Stripe variety of garlic, and perhaps the most beautiful garlic we grow. It has excellent flavor, especially when roasted, imparting garlicky sweetness to cooked dishes, without overwhelming heat. We purchase our seed from Hudson Valley Seed Company each year, grown on a New York State farm and is certified organic.
If you would like to plant your own garlic, you need to order it now. Most garlic will ship in September and should be planted in October.
Featured Friends
WNY is home to many small businesses and community organizations. Each month we introduce you to 2 that we think you should know.
Business Friend: Beegotten Farm
Sonora and Eran of Beegotten Farm are wonderful supporters of the local food movement. Beegotten Farm is an apiary in Lewiston, NY selling honey, maple syrup, eggs, and skin care products. Their humanely raised chickens roam on pasture field every day, packing their eggs with flavor and color from their free-range lifestyle. Their seasonally harvested honey is raw - unheated, unfiltered, and unadulterated. Eran harvests syrup each winter from Silver Maples, while Sonora uses their honey and herbs to make skin and lip care products that you can feel good about putting on your body. You can find Beegotten Farm each week at the Lewiston Artisan Farmers Market from June 3-October 14.
Community Organization Friend: Clean Air Coalition
The Clean Air Coalition builds power by developing grassroots leaders who organize their communities to run and win environmental justice and public health campaigns in Western New York. The Clean Air Coalition was founded by Western New York residents concerned about the environmental health in their neighborhoods and who demanded an active role in the the decisions that impact their communities. Clean Air’s initial campaign and victories were in Tonawanda — including a direct-action campaign to hold Tonawanda Coke responsible for the environmental and human toll its practices imposed on the community.
